THE big banks are considering a top-up mortgage rate rise in addition to a Reserve Bank-sanctioned increase if, as expected, the official cash rate is lifted by a further 25 basis points early next month.

ALL BUSINESS: Fed Rate Cut Futility (AP via Yahoo! Finance)

So the Fed’s interest rate cuts were supposed to make borrowing easier, right? If only that were so. Instead, jumbo mortgage rates are higher now than they were when the Fed began taking monetary action in September and have even shot up since the central bank’s aggressive rate cuts late last month.

Fixed-rate mortgages take big jump, near January levels (Market Watch)
